The two angels came to Sodom in the evening; and Lot was sitting in the gate of Sodom . When Lot saw them, he rose to meet them, and bowed himself with his face to the earth, 19:2 說:「我主啊,請你們到僕人家裡洗洗腳,住一夜,清早起來再走。」 and said, "My lords, turn aside, I pray you, to your servant's house and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may rise up early and go on your way." They said, "No; we will spend the night in the street." 19:3 羅得切切的請他們,他們這才進去,到他屋裡。 But he urged them strongly; so they turned aside to him and entered his house; and he made them a feast, and baked unleavened bread, and they ate. But before they lay down, the men of the city, the men of Sodom, both young and old, all the people to the last man, surrounded the house; 19:5 呼叫羅得說:「今日晚上到你這裡來的人在那裡呢? and they called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out to us, that we may know them." 19:6 羅得出來,把門關上,到眾人那裡, Lot went out of the door to the men, shut the door after him, 19:7 說:「眾弟兄,請你們不要作這惡事。 and said, "I beg you, my brothers, do not act so wickedly. Behold, I have two daughters who have not known man; let me bring them out to you, and do to them as you please; only do nothing to these men, for they have come under the shelter of my roof." 19:9 眾人說:「退去吧!」 But they said, "Stand back!" And they said, "This fellow came to sojourn, and he would play the judge! Now we will deal worse with you than with them." Then they pressed hard against the man Lot , and drew near to break the door. But the men put forth their hands and brought Lot into the house to them, and shut the door. And they struck with blindness the men who were at the door of the house, both small and great, so that they wearied themselves groping for the door. Then the men said to Lot , "Have you any one else here? Sons-in-law, sons, daughters, or any one you have in the city, bring them out of the place; 19:13 我們要毀滅這地方;因為城內罪惡的聲音在耶和華面前甚大,耶和華差我們來,要毀滅這地方。」 for we are about to destroy this place, because the outcry against its people has become great before the LORD, and the LORD has sent us to destroy it." 19:14 羅得就出去,告訴娶了【或作將要娶】他女兒的女婿們說:「你們起來離開這地方,因為耶和華要毀滅這城。」 So Lot went out and said to his sons-in-law, who were to marry his daughters, "Up, get out of this place; for the LORD is about to destroy the city." But he seemed to his sons-in-law to be jesting. When morning dawned, the angels urged Lot, saying, "Arise, take your wife and your two daughters who are here, lest you be consumed in the punishment of the city." 19:16 但羅得遲延不走。 But he lingered; so the men seized him and his wife and his two daughters by the hand, the LORD being merciful to him, and they brought him forth and set him outside the city. And when they had brought them forth, they said, "Flee for your life; do not look back or stop anywhere in the valley; flee to the hills, lest you be consumed." 19:18 羅得對他們說:「我主啊,不要如此! And Lot said to them, "Oh, no, my lords; 19:19 你僕人已經在你眼前蒙恩;你又向我顯出莫大的慈愛,救我的性命。 behold, your servant has found favor in your sight, and you have shown me great kindness in saving my life; but I cannot flee to the hills, lest the disaster overtake me, and I die. Behold, yonder city is near enough to flee to, and it is a little one. Let me escape there -- is it not a little one? -- and my life will be saved!" 19:21 天使對他說:「這事我也應允你;我不傾覆你所說的這城。 He said to him, "Behold, I grant you this favor also, that I will not overthrow the city of which you have spoken. Make haste, escape there; for I can do nothing till you arrive there." Therefore the name of the city was called Zo'ar. 19:23 羅得到了瑣珥,日頭已經出來了。 The sun had risen on the earth when Lot came to Zo'ar. 19:24 當時,耶和華將硫磺與火從天上耶和華那裡降與所多瑪和蛾摩拉, Then the LORD rained on Sodom and Gomor'rah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; 19:25 把那些城和全平原,並城裡所有的居民,連地上生長的,都毀滅了。 and he overthrew those cities, and all the valley, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and what grew on the ground. But Lot's wife behind him looked back, and she became a pillar of salt. And Abraham went early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the LORD; 19:28 向所多瑪和蛾摩拉與平原的全地觀看,不料,那地方煙氣上騰,如同燒窯一般。 and he looked down toward Sodom and Gomor'rah and toward all the land of the valley, and beheld, and lo, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace. So it was that, when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when he overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt. Now Lot went up out of Zo'ar, and dwelt in the hills with his two daughters, for he was afraid to dwell in Zo'ar; so he dwelt in a cave with his two daughters. And the first-born said to the younger, "Our father is old, and there is not a man on earth to come in to us after the manner of all the earth. Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve offspring through our father." 19:33 於是,那夜她們叫父親喝酒,大女兒就進去和她父親同寢;她幾時躺下,幾時起來,父親都不知道。 So they made their father drink wine that night; and the first-born went in, and lay with her father; he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. And on the next day, the first-born said to the younger, "Behold, I lay last night with my father; let us make him drink wine tonight also; then you go in and lie with him, that we may preserve offspring through our father." 19:35 於是,那夜她們又叫父親喝酒,小女兒起來與她父親同寢;她幾時躺下,幾時起來,父親都不知道。 So they made their father drink wine that night also; and the younger arose, and lay with him; and he did not know when she lay down or when she arose. Thus both the daughters of Lot were with child by their father. The first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab; he is the father of the Moabites to this day. The younger also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi; he is the father of the Ammonites to this day.
Dead flies make the perfumer's ointment give off an evil odor; so a little folly outweighs wisdom and honor. A wise man's heart inclines him toward the right, but a fool's heart toward the left. Even when the fool walks on the road, he lacks sense, and he says to every one that he is a fool. If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your place, for deference will make amends for great offenses. There is an evil which I have seen under the sun, as it were an error proceeding from the ruler: 10:6 就是愚昧人立在高位;富足人坐在低位。 folly is set in many high places, and the rich sit in a low place. I have seen slaves on horses, and princes walking on foot like slaves. He who digs a pit will fall into it; and a serpent will bite him who breaks through a wall. He who quarries stones is hurt by them; and he who splits logs is endangered by them. If the iron is blunt, and one does not whet the edge, he must put forth more strength; but wisdom helps one to succeed. If the serpent bites before it is charmed, there is no advantage in a charmer. The words of a wise man's mouth win him favor, but the lips of a fool consume him. The beginning of the words of his mouth is foolishness, and the end of his talk is wicked madness. A fool multiplies words, though no man knows what is to be, and who can tell him what will be after him? The toil of a fool wearies him, so that he does not know the way to the city. Woe to you, O land, when your king is a child, and your princes feast in the morning! Happy are you, O land, when your king is the son of free men, and your princes feast at the proper time, for strength, and not for drunkenness! Through sloth the roof sinks in, and through indolence the house leaks. Bread is made for laughter, and wine gladdens life, and money answers everything. Even in your thought, do not curse the king, nor in your bedchamber curse the rich; for a bird of the air will carry your voice, or some winged creature tell the matter.
Cast your bread upon the waters, for you will find it after many days. Give a portion to seven, or even to eight, for you know not what evil may happen on earth. If the clouds are full of rain, they empty themselves on the earth; and if a tree falls to the south or to the north, in the place where the tree falls, there it will lie. He who observes the wind will not sow; and he who regards the clouds will not reap. As you do not know how the spirit comes to the bones in the womb of a woman with child, so you do not know the work of God who makes everything. In the morning sow your seed, and at evening withhold not your hand; for you do not know which will prosper, this or that, or whether both alike will be good. Light is sweet, and it is pleasant for the eyes to behold the sun. For if a man lives many years, let him rejoice in them all; but let him remember that the days of darkness will be many. All that comes is vanity. Rejoice, O young man, in your youth, and let your heart cheer you in the days of your youth; walk in the ways of your heart and the sight of your eyes. But know that for all these things God will bring you into judgment. Remove vexation from your mind, and put away pain from your body; for youth and the dawn of life are vanity.
Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come, and the years draw nigh, when you will say, "I have no pleasure in them"; 12:2 不要等到日頭、光明、月亮、星宿變為黑暗,雨後雲彩反回, before the sun and the light and the moon and the stars are darkened and the clouds return after the rain; 12:3 看守房屋的發顫,有力的屈身,推磨的稀少就止息,從窗戶往外看的都昏暗; in the day when the keepers of the house tremble, and the strong men are bent, and the grinders cease because they are few, and those that look through the windows are dimmed, 12:4 街門關閉,推磨的響聲微小,雀鳥一叫,人就起來,唱歌的女子也都衰微。 and the doors on the street are shut; when the sound of the grinding is low, and one rises up at the voice of a bird, and all the daughters of song are brought low; 12:5 人怕高處,路上有驚慌,杏樹開花,蚱蜢成為重擔,人所願的也都廢掉;因為人歸他永遠的家,弔喪的在街上往來。 they are afraid also of what is high, and terrors are in the way; the almond tree blossoms, the grasshopper drags itself along and desire fails; because man goes to his eternal home, and the mourners go about the streets; 12:6 銀鍊折斷,金罐破裂,瓶子在泉旁損壞,水輪在井口破爛, before the silver cord is snapped, or the golden bowl is broken, or the pitcher is broken at the fountain, or the wheel broken at the cistern, 12:7 塵土仍歸於地,靈仍歸於賜靈的 神。 and the dust returns to the earth as it was, and the spirit returns to God who gave it. 12:8 傳道者說:「虛空的虛空,凡事都是虛空。」 Vanity of vanities, says the Preacher; all is vanity. Besides being wise, the Preacher also taught the people knowledge, weighing and studying and arranging proverbs with great care. The Preacher sought to find pleasing words, and uprightly he wrote words of truth. The sayings of the wise are like goads, and like nails firmly fixed are the collected sayings which are given by one Shepherd. My son, beware of anything beyond these. Of making many books there is no end, and much study is a weariness of the flesh. The end of the matter; all has been heard. Fear God, and keep his commandments; for this is the whole duty of man. For God will bring every deed into judgment, with every secret thing, whether good or evil.
