經文: 
4:1 提幔人以利法回答說：
4:2 人若想與你說話，你就厭煩嗎？但誰能忍住不說呢？
4:3 你素來教導許多的人，又堅固軟弱的手。
4:4 你的言語曾扶助那將要跌倒的人；你又使軟弱的膝穩固。
4:5 但現在禍患臨到你，你就昏迷，挨近你，你便驚惶。
4:6 你的倚靠不是在你敬畏　神嗎？你的盼望不是在你行事純正嗎？
4:7 請你追想：無辜的人有誰滅亡？正直的人在何處剪除？
4:8 按我所見，耕罪孽、種毒害的人都照樣收割。
4:9 　神一出氣，他們就滅亡；　神一發怒，他們就消沒。
4:10 獅子的吼叫和猛獅的聲音盡都止息；少壯獅子的牙齒也都敲掉。
4:11 老獅子因絕食而死；母獅之子也都離散。

默想: 提幔人以利法對約伯的表現感到相當失望，他認為約伯不了解自己為什麼受苦難，還敢大言不慚地怨東怨西。他認為苦難最主要的原因，就是「因果報應」一個無辜的人，怎麼可能會滅亡呢？照他所見與經驗的理解，「耕罪孽、種毒害的人都照樣收割」。所以約伯之所以會受到這樣的苦難，一定是在他的某些地方，行為不完全，所以上帝的刑罰才會臨到，他勸約伯要承認上帝的公義、明白上帝的聖潔。承認自己的不完全，我們不過是必死的人，在上帝的面前如何能夠算為義呢？
承認吧約伯！承認你自己是一個有罪的人，你一定有什麼地方得罪神，所以才有這些災難，你受上帝的這些處罰是應該的。

題目: 提幔人以利法如何詮釋約伯的苦難呢？

 

4:1 提幔人以利法回答說：
Then Eli'phaz the Te'manite answered:
4:2 人若想與你說話，你就厭煩嗎？但誰能忍住不說呢？
"If one ventures a word with you, will you be offended? Yet who can keep from speaking?
4:3 你素來教導許多的人，又堅固軟弱的手。
Behold, you have instructed many, and you have strengthened the weak hands.
4:4 你的言語曾扶助那將要跌倒的人；你又使軟弱的膝穩固。
Your words have upheld him who was stumbling, and you have made firm the feeble knees.
4:5 但現在禍患臨到你，你就昏迷，挨近你，你便驚惶。
But now it has come to you, and you are impatient; it touches you, and you are dismayed.
4:6 你的倚靠不是在你敬畏　神嗎？你的盼望不是在你行事純正嗎？
Is not your fear of God your confidence, and the integrity of your ways your hope?
4:7 請你追想：無辜的人有誰滅亡？正直的人在何處剪除？
"Think now, who that was innocent ever perished? Or where were the upright cut off?
4:8 按我所見，耕罪孽、種毒害的人都照樣收割。
As I have seen, those who plow iniquity and sow trouble reap the same.
4:9 　神一出氣，他們就滅亡；　神一發怒，他們就消沒。
By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his anger they are consumed.
4:10 獅子的吼叫和猛獅的聲音盡都止息；少壯獅子的牙齒也都敲掉。
The roar of the lion, the voice of the fierce lion, the teeth of the young lions, are broken.
4:11 老獅子因絕食而死；母獅之子也都離散。
The strong lion perishes for lack of prey, and the whelps of the lioness are scattered.
4:12 我暗暗地得了默示；我耳朵也聽其細微的聲音。
"Now a word was brought to me stealthily, my ear received the whisper of it.
4:13 在思念夜中、異象之間，世人沉睡的時候，
Amid thoughts from visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,
4:14 恐懼、戰兢臨到我身，使我百骨打戰。
dread came upon me, and trembling, which made all my bones shake.
4:15 有靈從我面前經過，我身上的毫毛直立。
A spirit glided past my face; the hair of my flesh stood up.
4:16 那靈停住，我卻不能辨其形狀；有影像在我眼前。我在靜默中聽見有聲音說：
It stood still, but I could not discern its appearance. A form was before my eyes; there was silence, then I heard a voice:
4:17 必死的人豈能比　神公義嗎？人豈能比造他的主潔淨嗎？
`Can mortal man be righteous before God? Can a man be pure before his Maker?
4:18 主不信靠他的臣僕，並且指他的使者為愚昧；
Even in his servants he puts no trust, and his angels he charges with error;
4:19 何況那住在土房、根基在塵土裡、被蠹蟲所毀壞的人呢？
how much more those who dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed before the moth.
4:20 早晚之間，就被毀滅，永歸無有，無人理會。
Between morning and evening they are destroyed; they perish for ever without any regarding it.
4:21 他帳棚的繩索豈不從中抽出來呢？他死，且是無智慧而死。
If their tent-cord is plucked up within them, do they not die, and that without wisdom?'

經文：
3:1 此後，約伯開口咒詛自己的生日，
3:2 說：
3:3 願我生的那日和說懷了男胎的那夜都滅沒。
3:4 願那日變為黑暗；願　神不從上面尋找它；願亮光不照於其上。
3:5 願黑暗和死蔭索取那日；願密雲停在其上；願日蝕恐嚇它。
3:6 願那夜被幽暗奪取，不在年中的日子同樂，也不入月中的數目。
3:7 願那夜沒有生育，其間也沒有歡樂的聲音。
3:8 願那咒詛日子且能惹動鱷魚的咒詛那夜。
3:9 願那夜黎明的星宿變為黑暗，盼亮卻不亮，也不見早晨的光線（原文是眼皮）；
3:10 因沒有把懷我胎的門關閉，也沒有將患難對我的眼隱藏。

默想: 在面對極端痛苦的打擊時，約伯開口咒詛自己的生日(1-10)，他一口氣講了十六個咒願(滅沒、黑暗、無光、…)。他覺得自己來到這個世界上本來就是不應該。
接著，他怨恨自己的誕生(11-19)，他說為何我「不出母胎而死、出母腹絕氣」、為何「有膝接收我、有奶哺養我」。他認為如果他能夠一出生就死亡，或許就可以不用面對這些苦難。
然後，他表現出渴望死亡(20-22)，覺得自己的生命完全不值得留戀(20-22)，他求死，卻不得死。最後他表現出生命的不滿(23-26)
約伯無端地去面對苦難，沒有人可以給他適當的解釋，約伯自己也沒有答案，這種沒有理由的苦難，帶給而約伯內心更大的痛苦，他只能在深深地絕望中，激烈地表達自己的悲痛。

題目: 約伯在極端痛苦時，對於死亡有何種看法呢？

 

3:1 此後，約伯開口咒詛自己的生日，
After this Job opened his mouth and cursed the day of his birth.
3:2 說：
And Job said:
3:3 願我生的那日和說懷了男胎的那夜都滅沒。
"Let the day perish wherein I was born, and the night which said, `A man-child is conceived.'
3:4 願那日變為黑暗；願　神不從上面尋找它；願亮光不照於其上。
Let that day be darkness! May God above not seek it, nor light shine upon it.
3:5 願黑暗和死蔭索取那日；願密雲停在其上；願日蝕恐嚇它。
Let gloom and deep darkness claim it. Let clouds dwell upon it; let the blackness of the day terrify it.
3:6 願那夜被幽暗奪取，不在年中的日子同樂，也不入月中的數目。
That night -- let thick darkness seize it! let it not rejoice among the days of the year, let it not come into the number of the months.
3:7 願那夜沒有生育，其間也沒有歡樂的聲音。
Yea, let that night be barren; let no joyful cry be heard in it.
3:8 願那咒詛日子且能惹動鱷魚的咒詛那夜。
Let those curse it who curse the day, who are skilled to rouse up Levi'athan.
3:9 願那夜黎明的星宿變為黑暗，盼亮卻不亮，也不見早晨的光線（原文是眼皮）；
Let the stars of its dawn be dark; let it hope for light, but have none, nor see the eyelids of the morning;
3:10 因沒有把懷我胎的門關閉，也沒有將患難對我的眼隱藏。
because it did not shut the doors of my mother's womb, nor hide trouble from my eyes.
3:11 我為何不出母胎而死？為何不出母腹絕氣？
"Why did I not die at birth, come forth from the womb and expire?
3:12 為何有膝接收我？為何有奶哺養我？
Why did the knees receive me? Or why the breasts, that I should suck?
3:13 不然，我就早已躺臥安睡，
For then I should have lain down and been quiet; I should have slept; then I should have been at rest,
3:14 和地上為自己重造荒邱的君王、謀士，
with kings and counselors of the earth who rebuilt ruins for themselves,
3:15 或與有金子、將銀子裝滿了房屋的王子一同安息；
or with princes who had gold, who filled their houses with silver.
3:16 或像隱而未現、不到期而落的胎，歸於無有，如同未見光的嬰孩。
Or why was I not as a hidden untimely birth, as infants that never see the light?
3:17 在那裡惡人止息攪擾，困乏人得享安息，
There the wicked cease from troubling, and there the weary are at rest.
3:18 被囚的人同得安逸，不聽見督工的聲音。
There the prisoners are at ease together; they hear not the voice of the taskmaster.
3:19 大小都在那裡；奴僕脫離主人的轄制。
The small and the great are there, and the slave is free from his master.
3:20 受患難的人為何有光賜給他呢？心中愁苦的人為何有生命賜給他呢？
"Why is light given to him that is in misery, and life to the bitter in soul,
3:21 他們切望死，卻不得死；求死，勝於求隱藏的珍寶。
who long for death, but it comes not, and dig for it more than for hid treasures;
3:22 他們尋見墳墓就快樂，極其歡喜。
who rejoice exceedingly, and are glad, when they find the grave?
3:23 人的道路既然遮隱，　神又把他四面圍困，為何有光賜給他呢？
Why is light given to a man whose way is hid, whom God has hedged in?
3:24 我未曾吃飯就發出歎息；我唉哼的聲音湧出如水。
For my sighing comes as my bread, and my groanings are poured out like water.
3:25 因我所恐懼的臨到我身，我所懼怕的迎我而來。
For the thing that I fear comes upon me, and what I dread befalls me.
3:26 我不得安逸，不得平靜，也不得安息，卻有患難來到。
I am not at ease, nor am I quiet; I have no rest; but trouble comes."

經文：
2:9 他的妻子對他說：「你仍然持守你的純正嗎？你棄掉　神，死了吧！」
2:10 約伯卻對她說：「你說話像愚頑的婦一樣。噯！難道我們從　神手裡得福，不也受禍嗎？」在這一切的事上約伯並不以口犯罪。

默想: 約伯所遭受到的苦難，其實也是他妻子所遭遇的苦難，約伯一夕間失去所有的財產，失去所有的兒女。他的太太也是一夕間失去所有的財產與兒女。所以我們不要簡單地認為約伯的太太在這裡只是一個抱怨上帝，責怪上帝的不幫忙，或只是講一些沒有信心的話。我們相信，身為一個母親，失去兒女的痛苦，絕對不會比父親來得少一點。在第一次的災難中，約伯的妻子，並沒有發出任何的怨言。當約伯第二次受到打擊時，雖然災難不是臨到約伯妻子的身上，不過，我們可以想像，原本自己的丈夫在「東方人中為至大」如今卻落入這般光景。身為妻子的人，不可能在那裡涼快過日子，她內心中的痛苦、壓力，絕不比約伯來得小。
身為一個妻子，她的言論是站在替自己的丈夫著想，她為了自己的丈夫好，所以建議他放棄他的純正、上帝。最主要的原因就是約伯的純正並沒有為他帶來好處；那些敗壞的人，都沒有他這麼慘的遭遇，在一般人的反應中，「好人沒好報」那幹嘛要當好人呢？另外，約伯一心仰望上帝，但是依靠上帝的人卻有如此悲慘的苦難，約伯所仰望的神在那裡呢？若這位上帝不看顧或沒有能力保守約伯，約伯為何要持續地依靠上帝？約伯的太太或許認為當他在這樣的苦難中，需要做什麼來讓心境得著撫平。其中可以做的就是離開他所持守的純正與上帝，至少內心會比較好過一點。而不是在苦難中，苦苦地哀求上帝，卻得不著任何的回應。

題目: 約伯的妻子與三位朋友，對於約伯所遭遇的苦難，有何不同的反應呢？

 

2:1 又有一天，　神的眾子來侍立在耶和華面前，撒但也來在其中。
Again there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them to present himself before the LORD.
2:2 耶和華問撒但說：「你從哪裡來？」撒但回答說：「我從地上走來走去，往返而來。」
And the LORD said to Satan, "Whence have you come?" Satan answered the LORD, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it."
2:3 耶和華問撒但說：「你曾用心察看我的僕人約伯沒有？地上再沒有人像他完全正直，敬畏　神，遠離惡事。你雖激動我攻擊他，無故地毀滅他，他仍然持守他的純正。」
And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil? He still holds fast his integrity, although you moved me against him, to destroy him without cause."
2:4 撒但回答耶和華說：「人以皮代皮，情願捨去一切所有的，保全性命。
Then Satan answered the LORD, "Skin for skin! All that a man has he will give for his life.
2:5 你且伸手傷他的骨頭和他的肉，他必當面棄掉你。」
But put forth thy hand now, and touch his bone and his flesh, and he will curse thee to thy face."
2:6 耶和華對撒但說：「他在你手中，只要存留他的性命。」
And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, he is in your power; only spare his life."
2:7 於是撒但從耶和華面前退去，擊打約伯，使他從腳掌到頭頂長毒瘡。
So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD, and afflicted Job with loathsome sores from the sole of his foot to the crown of his head.
2:8 約伯就坐在爐灰中，拿瓦片刮身體。
And he took a potsherd with which to scrape himself, and sat among the ashes.
2:9 他的妻子對他說：「你仍然持守你的純正嗎？你棄掉　神，死了吧！」
Then his wife said to him, "Do you still hold fast your integrity? Curse God, and die."
2:10 約伯卻對她說：「你說話像愚頑的婦一樣。噯！難道我們從　神手裡得福，不也受禍嗎？」在這一切的事上約伯並不以口犯罪。
But he said to her, "You speak as one of the foolish women would speak. Shall we receive good at the hand of God, and shall we not receive evil?" In all this Job did not sin with his lips.
2:11 約伯的三個朋友─提幔人以利法、書亞人比勒達、拿瑪人瑣法─聽說有這一切的災禍臨到他身上，各人就從本處約會同來，為他悲傷，安慰他。
Now when Job's three friends heard of all this evil that had come upon him, they came each from his own place, Eli'phaz the Te'manite, Bildad the Shuhite, and Zophar the Na'amathite. They made an appointment together to come to condole with him and comfort him.
2:12 他們遠遠地舉目觀看，認不出他來，就放聲大哭。各人撕裂外袍，把塵土向天揚起來，落在自己的頭上。
And when they saw him from afar, they did not recognize him; and they raised their voices and wept; and they rent their robes and sprinkled dust upon their heads toward heaven.
2:13 他們就同他七天七夜坐在地上，一個人也不向他說句話，因為他極其痛苦。
And they sat with him on the ground seven days and seven nights, and no one spoke a word to him, for they saw that his suffering was very great.

約伯在東方人中為至大

 經文：
1:20 約伯便起來，撕裂外袍，剃了頭，伏在地上下拜，
1:21 說：「我赤身出於母胎，也必赤身歸回；賞賜的是耶和華，收取的也是耶和華。耶和華的名是應當稱頌的。」
1:22 在這一切的事上約伯並不犯罪，也不以　神為愚妄（或譯：也不妄評　神）。

默想: 約伯是個義人，但是上帝卻同意讓撒但攻擊約伯。因為撒但說，約伯之所以對上帝有敬虔的心，是因為上帝給他很多物質的祝福。如果上帝把這些物質的祝福統統拿掉，約伯就不可能這樣信靠上帝了。很顯然的，撒但認為，人之所以相信上帝，是因為上帝給人好處。若上帝不給人好處，沒有人要相信上帝。簡而言之，一個人之所以信靠上帝，對上帝有信心，其實不是出於內心的敬虔，只是為了趨吉避凶，為了得到好處、蒙受祝福罷了。如果一個人相信上帝，卻沒有得到上帝給好處與祝福，那麼人們必然拂袖而去，再也不理會這位上帝了。
雖然撒但提出這樣的挑戰，然而上帝接受這個挑戰，容許撒但把約伯的身外之物統統拿走。於是在一日之內約伯失去了一切的財產、子女。這樣接連而來的災難，相信會讓約伯感到痛苦，他也會對臨到自己的這些災難感到不解，為什麼這些事會密集的臨到呢？上帝為什麼容許這些事發生呢？但是約伯並沒有因此埋怨上帝，他反而說：「賞賜的是耶和華，收取的也是耶和華，耶和華的名是應當稱頌的。」(21)無論如何，在撒但的第一波攻擊中，約伯並沒有因此而離棄上帝，也沒有因此而埋怨上帝。約伯展現出他的信仰，並不像撒但所猜測的那樣，只是為了尋得好處而依靠神，當信靠上帝沒有保障或好處時，就「當面棄掉上帝」。

題目: 本段經文中，我們看到約伯的苦難有幾種來源呢？

 

1:1 烏斯地有一個人名叫約伯；那人完全正直，敬畏　神，遠離惡事。
There was a man in the land of Uz, whose name was Job; and that man was blameless and upright, one who feared God, and turned away from evil.
1:2 他生了七個兒子，三個女兒。
There were born to him seven sons and three daughters.
1:3 他的家產有七千羊，三千駱駝，五百對牛，五百母驢，並有許多僕婢。這人在東方人中就為至大。
He had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, and five hundred she-asses, and very many servants; so that this man was the greatest of all the people of the east.
1:4 他的兒子按著日子各在自己家裡設擺筵宴，就打發人去，請了他們的三個姊妹來，與他們一同吃喝。
His sons used to go and hold a feast in the house of each on his day; and they would send and invite their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
1:5 筵宴的日子過了，約伯打發人去叫他們自潔。他清早起來，按著他們眾人的數目獻燔祭；因為他說：「恐怕我兒子犯了罪，心中棄掉　神。」約伯常常這樣行。
And when the days of the feast had run their course, Job would send and sanctify them, and he would rise early in the morning and offer burnt offerings according to the number of them all; for Job said, "It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts." Thus Job did continually.
1:6 有一天，　神的眾子來侍立在耶和華面前，撒但也來在其中。
Now there was a day when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came among them.
1:7 耶和華問撒但說：「你從哪裡來？」撒但回答說：「我從地上走來走去，往返而來。」
The LORD said to Satan, "Whence have you come?" Satan answered the LORD, "From going to and fro on the earth, and from walking up and down on it."
1:8 耶和華問撒但說：「你曾用心察看我的僕人約伯沒有？地上再沒有人像他完全正直，敬畏　神，遠離惡事。」
And the LORD said to Satan, "Have you considered my servant Job, that there is none like him on the earth, a blameless and upright man, who fears God and turns away from evil?"
1:9 撒但回答耶和華說：「約伯敬畏　神，豈是無故呢？
Then Satan answered the LORD, "Does Job fear God for nought?
1:10 你豈不是四面圈上籬笆圍護他和他的家，並他一切所有的嗎？他手所做的都蒙你賜福；他的家產也在地上增多。
Hast thou not put a hedge about him and his house and all that he has, on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his possessions have increased in the land.
1:11 你且伸手毀他一切所有的；他必當面棄掉你。」
But put forth thy hand now, and touch all that he has, and he will curse thee to thy face."
1:12 耶和華對撒但說：「凡他所有的都在你手中；只是不可伸手加害於他。」於是撒但從耶和華面前退去。
And the LORD said to Satan, "Behold, all that he has is in your power; only upon himself do not put forth your hand." So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
1:13 有一天，約伯的兒女正在他們長兄的家裡吃飯喝酒，
Now there was a day when his sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house;
1:14 有報信的來見約伯，說：「牛正耕地，驢在旁邊吃草，
and there came a messenger to Job, and said, "The oxen were plowing and the asses feeding beside them;
1:15 示巴人忽然闖來，把牲畜擄去，並用刀殺了僕人；惟有我一人逃脫，來報信給你。」
and the Sabe'ans fell upon them and took them, and slew the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you."
1:16 他還說話的時候，又有人來說：「　神從天上降下火來，將群羊和僕人都燒滅了；惟有我一人逃脫，來報信給你。」
While he was yet speaking, there came another, and said, "The fire of God fell from heaven and burned up the sheep and the servants, and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you."
1:17 他還說話的時候，又有人來說：「迦勒底人分作三隊忽然闖來，把駱駝擄去，並用刀殺了僕人；惟有我一人逃脫，來報信給你。」
While he was yet speaking, there came another, and said, "The Chalde'ans formed three companies, and made a raid upon the camels and took them, and slew the servants with the edge of the sword; and I alone have escaped to tell you."
1:18 他還說話的時候，又有人來說：「你的兒女正在他們長兄的家裡吃飯喝酒，
While he was yet speaking, there came another, and said, "Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their eldest brother's house;
1:19 不料，有狂風從曠野颳來，擊打房屋的四角，房屋倒塌在少年人身上，他們就都死了；惟有我一人逃脫，來報信給你。」
and behold, a great wind came across the wilderness, and struck the four corners of the house, and it fell upon the young people, and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you."
1:20 約伯便起來，撕裂外袍，剃了頭，伏在地上下拜，

弟兄姐妹彼此接納相愛

 經文：
5:13 又因他們所做的工，用愛心格外尊重他們。你們也要彼此和睦。
5:14 我們又勸弟兄們，要警戒不守規矩的人，勉勵灰心的人，扶助軟弱的人，也要向眾人忍耐。
5:15 你們要謹慎，無論是誰都不可以惡報惡；或是彼此相待，或是待眾人，常要追求良善。 

默想: 在這段聖經中，保羅提到，教會中所有的人，彼此相處應該有的情形(13b-15)包括要彼此和睦(13b)、要警戒、勉勵、扶助那些屬靈光景不佳的兄弟姐妹。(14a)，但是要記得向眾人忍耐(14b)，不是因為他們的屬靈光景佳，就失去了包容忍耐的心。所以保羅勸勉他們，不可以惡報惡(15a)，這種態度不是我們在教會�與人相處的方式，而是要「常要追求良善」用這種態度來彼此相待，或是待眾人。這樣才是基督徒與人相處的態度。
我們當常思想，我們如何對待那些軟弱的、欠缺的，保羅對那些異端非常嚴厲，對那些作惡使人跌倒的也常常不留情面。但是保羅卻一再提醒我們對於弟兄姐妹的軟弱要包容、忍耐、接納，「如同基督接納你們一樣。」(羅十五7)

題目: 保羅在本段經文中，對於人際關係，有那些教導？

 

5:1 弟兄們，論到時候、日期，不用寫信給你們，
But as to the times and the seasons, brethren, you have no need to have anything written to you.
5:2 因為你們自己明明曉得，主的日子來到，好像夜間的賊一樣。
For you yourselves know well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night.
5:3 人正說「平安穩妥」的時候，災禍忽然臨到他們，如同產難臨到懷胎的婦人一樣，他們絕不能逃脫。
When people say, "There is peace and security," then sudden destruction will come upon them as travail comes upon a woman with child, and there will be no escape.
5:4 弟兄們，你們卻不在黑暗裡，叫那日子臨到你們像賊一樣。
But you are not in darkness, brethren, for that day to surprise you like a thief.
5:5 你們都是光明之子，都是白晝之子。我們不是屬黑夜的，也不是屬幽暗的。
For you are all sons of light and sons of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness.
5:6 所以，我們不要睡覺像別人一樣，總要警醒謹守。
So then let us not sleep, as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober.
5:7 因為睡了的人是在夜間睡，醉了的人是在夜間醉。
For those who sleep sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night.
5:8 但我們既然屬乎白晝，就應當謹守，把信和愛當作護心鏡遮胸，把得救的盼望當作頭盔戴上。
But, since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation.
5:9 因為　神不是預定我們受刑，乃是預定我們藉著我們主耶穌基督得救。
For God has not destined us for wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,
5:10 他替我們死，叫我們無論醒著，睡著，都與他同活。
who died for us so that whether we wake or sleep we might live with him.
5:11 所以，你們該彼此勸慰，互相建立，正如你們素常所行的。
Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.
5:12 弟兄們，我們勸你們敬重那在你們中間勞苦的人，就是在主裡面治理你們、勸戒你們的；
But we beseech you, brethren, to respect those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you,
5:13 又因他們所做的工，用愛心格外尊重他們。你們也要彼此和睦。
and to esteem them very highly in love because of their work. Be at peace among yourselves.
5:14 我們又勸弟兄們，要警戒不守規矩的人，勉勵灰心的人，扶助軟弱的人，也要向眾人忍耐。
And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the idlers, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all.
5:15 你們要謹慎，無論是誰都不可以惡報惡；或是彼此相待，或是待眾人，常要追求良善。
See that none of you repays evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to all.
5:16 要常常喜樂，
Rejoice always,
5:17 不住地禱告，
pray constantly,
5:18 凡事謝恩；因為這是　神在基督耶穌裡向你們所定的旨意。
give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
5:19 不要消滅聖靈的感動；
Do not quench the Spirit,
5:20 不要藐視先知的講論。
do not despise prophesying,
5:21 但要凡事察驗；善美的要持守，
but test everything; hold fast what is good,
5:22 各樣的惡事要禁戒不做。
abstain from every form of evil.
5:23 願賜平安的　神親自使你們全然成聖！又願你們的靈與魂與身子得蒙保守，在我們主耶穌基督降臨的時候，完全無可指摘！
May the God of peace himself sanctify you wholly; and may your spirit and soul and body be kept sound and blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
5:24 那召你們的本是信實的，他必成就這事。
He who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.
5:25 請弟兄們為我們禱告。
Brethren, pray for us.
5:26 與眾弟兄親嘴問安，務要聖潔。
Greet all the brethren with a holy kiss.
5:27 我指著主囑咐你們，要把這信念給眾弟兄聽。
I adjure you by the Lord that this letter be read to all the brethren.
5:28 願我主耶穌基督的恩常與你們同在！
The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

4:17 以後我們這活著還存留的人必和他們一同被提到雲裡，在空中與主相遇。這樣，我們就要和主永遠同在。
4:18 所以，你們當用這些話彼此勸慰。

 默想: 保羅在這裡提醒帖撒羅尼迦的信徒要「成為聖潔，遠避淫行。」可能在他們的教會中，有人並沒有守住自己尊貴的身體，而放縱私慾邪情，如同那些不認識上帝的外邦人一樣。所以保羅勉他們，上帝的旨意是要我們「成為聖潔」(7)若有人在這樣的事情上，棄絕了聖潔的教訓，就是棄絕那賜聖靈給我們的上帝。(8)
然後保羅提醒他們要「弟兄們相愛」，要明白上帝的教訓就是要我們「彼此相愛」；保羅會這樣提醒他們，很可能正是他們當中，並沒有做到切實相愛，可能有一些人常常批評別人，所以保羅要他們「立志作安靜人，辦自己的事，親手作工。」(11)
最後，有一些人可能期望主耶穌的早日再臨，但是時間一久了，他們的內心開始起了疑惑，特別是面對一些信主年長的弟兄，在還沒有等候到主再臨的時候，就「安息」了，這些活著的人，可能想，那麼這些主還沒有再來，就已經死了的人，他們將來是否能夠與主再相見。面對初代教會的這種疑惑，保羅不希望他們憂傷，而失去指望。(13)他教導信徒，那些已死的信徒，是在主裡睡了，會在我們活著的人之先。(15)將來主再臨的時候，他們將會復活，與我們一起被提，在空中與主相遇，然後永遠與主同在。(17)

題目: 從本章經文中你發現帖撒羅尼迦教會可能面對那些問題呢？

Finally, brethren, we beseech and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you learned from us how you ought to live and to please God, just as you are doing, you do so more and more.

For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.
4:3 　神的旨意就是要你們成為聖潔，遠避淫行；
For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from unchastity;
4:4 要你們各人曉得怎樣用聖潔、尊貴守著自己的身體，
that each one of you know how to take a wife for himself in holiness and honor,
4:5 不放縱私慾的邪情，像那不認識　神的外邦人。
not in the passion of lust like heathen who do not know God;
4:6 不要一個人在這事上越分，欺負他的弟兄；因為這一類的事，主必報應，正如我預先對你們說過、又切切囑咐你們的。
that no man transgress, and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we solemnly forewarned you.
4:7 　神召我們，本不是要我們沾染污穢，乃是要我們成為聖潔。
For God has not called us for uncleanness, but in holiness.
4:8 所以，那棄絕的，不是棄絕人，乃是棄絕那賜聖靈給你們的　神。
Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.
4:9 論到弟兄們相愛，不用人寫信給你們；因為你們自己蒙了　神的教訓，叫你們彼此相愛。
But concerning love of the brethren you have no need to have any one write to you, for you yourselves have been taught by God to love one another;

and indeed you do love all the brethren throughout Macedo'nia. But we exhort you, brethren, to do so more and more,
4:11 又要立志作安靜人，辦自己的事，親手做工，正如我們從前所吩咐你們的，
to aspire to live quietly, to mind your own affairs, and to work with your hands, as we charged you;
4:12 叫你們可以向外人行事端正，自己也就沒有甚麼缺乏了。
so that you may command the respect of outsiders, and be dependent on nobody.
4:13 論到睡了的人，我們不願意弟兄們不知道，恐怕你們憂傷，像那些沒有指望的人一樣。
But we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning those who are asleep, that you may not grieve as others do who have no hope.
4:14 我們若信耶穌死而復活了，那已經在耶穌裡睡了的人，　神也必將他們與耶穌一同帶來。
For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
4:15 我們現在照主的話告訴你們一件事：我們這活著還存留到主降臨的人，斷不能在那已經睡了的人之先。
For this we declare to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, shall not precede those who have fallen asleep.
4:16 因為主必親自從天降臨，有呼叫的聲音和天使長的聲音，又有　神的號吹響；那在基督裡死了的人必先復活。
For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a cry of command, with the archangel's call, and with the sound of the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ will rise first;
4:17 以後我們這活著還存留的人必和他們一同被提到雲裡，在空中與主相遇。這樣，我們就要和主永遠同在。
then we who are alive, who are left, shall be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air; and so we shall always be with the Lord.
4:18 所以，你們當用這些話彼此勸慰。
Therefore comfort one another with these words.
