經文: 撒母耳記上 4:17 報信的回答說：以色列人在非利士人面前逃跑，民中被殺的甚多！你的兩個兒子何弗尼、非尼哈也都死了，並且神的約櫃被擄去。
默想: 以利以及兩個兒子何弗尼、非尼哈誤導以色列百姓，讓他們誤以為只要擁有耶和華的約櫃，就可以戰勝敵人。或許他們認為耶和華為了自己名的緣故，在最後關頭耶和華會顯出神威，擊殺敵人，不讓約櫃被敵人所俘虜。那裡知道，何弗尼、非尼哈以及以色列人雖然擁有耶和華的約櫃，但是他們的日常生活行為，卻是得罪耶和華。耶和華寧可讓約櫃被非利士人擄去，也不出手保護得罪他的以利兩個兒子以及以色列百姓。約櫃是大祭司一年一次的贖罪日 (Yom Kippur) 才得以代表全體以色列民到耶和華面前贖罪敬拜之處。約櫃可以說是以色列民的宗教儀式行為，當以色列人的生活倫理行為已經偏離了耶和華所吩咐的律例誡命時，雖然還是在宗教儀式行為上照常進行，卻得不到耶和華的悅納與保護。記得亞當與夏娃的兩個兒子該隱與亞伯都到耶和華面前獻祭。亞伯牧羊，獻上羊羔，該隱耕作，獻上土產。聖經說，耶和華看中了亞伯和他的供物，卻看不中該隱和他的供物。亞伯的為人與倫理生活行為被耶和華看中在先，亞伯的供物與宗教儀式行為被耶和華悅納乃是在後。該隱不明就理，以為耶和華喜歡吃涮羊肉，對亞伯偏愛，因而向耶和華暴怒到變了臉色。耶和華向該隱說，你若行得好，豈不蒙悅納？你若行得不好，罪就伏在門前。他必戀慕你，你卻要制伏他。(創4:7) 耶和華很清楚的提醒該隱，要在日常生活倫理行為中悔改向善，然後他的獻祭就可以得到耶和華的悅納。該隱不只不知悔改，還將怒氣轉移到亞伯身上而殺害了無辜的亞伯。在這裡我們看到以利的兩個兒子何弗尼、非尼哈以及以色列人也誤以為他們只要擁有宗教儀式行為，就可以蒙耶和華悅納與保護。求主幫助我，不要陷入以利的兩個兒子何弗尼、非尼哈以及以色列人那樣只是遵行宗教儀式行為，卻在生活倫理行為上面得罪上帝。求主幫助我，每天會自我反省並悔改，遵行上帝的命令與誡命。
題目: 耶和華發出的警訊，未得以色列民的注意，以致耶和華離開他們，而受到非利士人的攻擊、被殺、約櫃被擄。試想，在日常生活中，我們是否儆醒省察上主發出的警訊？不至於在上主離開我們後，才恍然大悟？(v1-11)
4:1 以色列人出去與非利士人打仗，安營在以便以謝；非利士人安營在亞弗。
And the word of Samuel came to all Israel. Now Israel went out to battle against the Philistines; they encamped at Ebene'zer, and the Philistines encamped at Aphek.
4:2 非利士人向以色列人擺陣。兩軍交戰的時候，以色列人敗在非利士人面前；非利士人在戰場上殺了他們的軍兵約有四千人。
The Philistines drew up in line against Israel, and when the battle spread, Israel was defeated by the Philistines, who slew about four thousand men on the field of battle.
4:3 百姓回到營裡，以色列的長老說：「耶和華今日為何使我們敗在非利士人面前呢？我們不如將耶和華的約櫃從示羅抬到我們這裡來，好在我們中間救我們脫離敵人的手。」
And when the troops came to the camp, the elders of Israel said, "Why has the LORD put us to rout today before the Philistines? Let us bring the ark of the covenant of the LORD here from Shiloh, that he may come among us and save us from the power of our enemies."
4:4 於是百姓打發人到示羅，從那裡將坐在二基路伯上萬軍之耶和華的約櫃抬來。以利的兩個兒子何弗尼、非尼哈與 神的約櫃同來。
So the people sent to Shiloh, and brought from there the ark of the covenant of the LORD of hosts, who is enthroned on the cherubim; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phin'ehas, were there with the ark of the covenant of God.
4:5 耶和華的約櫃到了營中，以色列眾人就大聲歡呼，地便震動。
When the ark of the covenant of the LORD came into the camp, all Israel gave a mighty shout, so that the earth resounded.
4:6 非利士人聽見歡呼的聲音，就說：「在希伯來人營裡大聲歡呼，是甚麼緣故呢？」隨後就知道耶和華的約櫃到了營中。
And when the Philistines heard the noise of the shouting, they said, "What does this great shouting in the camp of the Hebrews mean?" And when they learned that the ark of the LORD had come to the camp,
4:7 非利士人就懼怕起來，說：「有神到了他們營中」；又說：「我們有禍了！向來不曾有這樣的事。
the Philistines were afraid; for they said, "A god has come into the camp." And they said, "Woe to us! For nothing like this has happened before.
4:8 我們有禍了！誰能救我們脫離這些大能之神的手呢？從前在曠野用各樣災殃擊打埃及人的，就是這些神。
Woe to us! Who can deliver us from the power of these mighty gods? These are the gods who smote the Egyptians with every sort of plague in the wilderness.
4:9 非利士人哪，你們要剛強，要作大丈夫，免得作希伯來人的奴僕，如同他們作你們的奴僕一樣。你們要作大丈夫，與他們爭戰。」
Take courage, and acquit yourselves like men, O Philistines, lest you become slaves to the Hebrews as they have been to you; acquit yourselves like men and fight."
4:10 非利士人和以色列人打仗，以色列人敗了，各向各家奔逃，被殺的人甚多，以色列的步兵仆倒了三萬。
So the Philistines fought, and Israel was defeated, and they fled, every man to his home; and there was a very great slaughter, for there fell of Israel thirty thousand foot soldiers.
4:11 神的約櫃被擄去，以利的兩個兒子何弗尼、非尼哈也都被殺了。
And the ark of God was captured; and the two sons of Eli, Hophni and Phin'ehas, were slain.
4:12 當日，有一個便雅憫人從陣上逃跑，衣服撕裂，頭蒙灰塵，來到示羅。
A man of Benjamin ran from the battle line, and came to Shiloh the same day, with his clothes rent and with earth upon his head.
4:13 到了的時候，以利正在道旁坐在自己的位上觀望，為 神的約櫃心裡擔憂。那人進城報信，合城的人就都呼喊起來。
When he arrived, Eli was sitting upon his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told the news, all the city cried out.
4:14 以利聽見呼喊的聲音就問說：「這喧嚷是甚麼緣故呢？」那人急忙來報信給以利。
When Eli heard the sound of the outcry, he said, "What is this uproar?" Then the man hastened and came and told Eli.
4:15 那時以利九十八歲了，眼目發直，不能看見。
Now Eli was ninety-eight years old and his eyes were set, so that he could not see.
4:16 那人對以利說：「我是從陣上來的，今日我從陣上逃回。」以利說：「我兒，事情怎樣？」
And the man said to Eli, "I am he who has come from the battle; I fled from the battle today." And he said, "How did it go, my son?"
4:17 報信的回答說：「以色列人在非利士人面前逃跑，民中被殺的甚多！你的兩個兒子何弗尼、非尼哈也都死了，並且 神的約櫃被擄去。」
He who brought the tidings answered and said, "Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great slaughter among the people; your two sons also, Hophni and Phin'ehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured."
4:18 他一提 神的約櫃，以利就從他的位上往後跌倒，在門旁折斷頸項而死；因為他年紀老邁，身體沉重。以利作以色列的士師四十年。
When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell over backward from his seat by the side of the gate; and his neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.
4:19 以利的兒婦、非尼哈的妻懷孕將到產期，她聽見 神的約櫃被擄去，公公和丈夫都死了，就猛然疼痛，曲身生產；
Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phin'ehas, was with child, about to give birth. And when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed and gave birth; for her pains came upon her.
4:20 將要死的時候，旁邊站著的婦人們對她說：「不要怕！你生了男孩子了。」她卻不回答，也不放在心上。
And about the time of her death the women attending her said to her, "Fear not, for you have borne a son." But she did not answer or give heed.
4:21 她給孩子起名叫以迦博，說：「榮耀離開以色列了！」這是因 神的約櫃被擄去，又因她公公和丈夫都死了。
And she named the child Ich'abod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel!" because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
4:22 她又說：「榮耀離開以色列，因為 神的約櫃被擄去了。」
And she said, "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured." 4:1 以色列人出去與非利士人打仗，安營在以便以謝；非利士人安營在亞弗。

4:13 到了的時候，以利正在道旁坐在自己的位上觀望，為 神的約櫃心裡擔憂。那人進城報信，合城的人就都呼喊起來。
When he arrived, Eli was sitting upon his seat by the road watching, for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city and told the news, all the city cried out.
4:14 以利聽見呼喊的聲音就問說：「這喧嚷是甚麼緣故呢？」那人急忙來報信給以利。
When Eli heard the sound of the outcry, he said, "What is this uproar?" Then the man hastened and came and told Eli.
4:15 那時以利九十八歲了，眼目發直，不能看見。
Now Eli was ninety-eight years old and his eyes were set, so that he could not see.
4:16 那人對以利說：「我是從陣上來的，今日我從陣上逃回。」以利說：「我兒，事情怎樣？」
And the man said to Eli, "I am he who has come from the battle; I fled from the battle today." And he said, "How did it go, my son?"
4:17 報信的回答說：「以色列人在非利士人面前逃跑，民中被殺的甚多！你的兩個兒子何弗尼、非尼哈也都死了，並且 神的約櫃被擄去。」
He who brought the tidings answered and said, "Israel has fled before the Philistines, and there has also been a great slaughter among the people; your two sons also, Hophni and Phin'ehas, are dead, and the ark of God has been captured."
4:18 他一提 神的約櫃，以利就從他的位上往後跌倒，在門旁折斷頸項而死；因為他年紀老邁，身體沉重。以利作以色列的士師四十年。
When he mentioned the ark of God, Eli fell over backward from his seat by the side of the gate; and his neck was broken and he died, for he was an old man, and heavy. He had judged Israel forty years.
4:19 以利的兒婦、非尼哈的妻懷孕將到產期，她聽見 神的約櫃被擄去，公公和丈夫都死了，就猛然疼痛，曲身生產；
Now his daughter-in-law, the wife of Phin'ehas, was with child, about to give birth. And when she heard the tidings that the ark of God was captured, and that her father-in-law and her husband were dead, she bowed and gave birth; for her pains came upon her.
4:20 將要死的時候，旁邊站著的婦人們對她說：「不要怕！你生了男孩子了。」她卻不回答，也不放在心上。
And about the time of her death the women attending her said to her, "Fear not, for you have borne a son." But she did not answer or give heed.
4:21 她給孩子起名叫以迦博，說：「榮耀離開以色列了！」這是因 神的約櫃被擄去，又因她公公和丈夫都死了。
And she named the child Ich'abod, saying, "The glory has departed from Israel!" because the ark of God had been captured and because of her father-in-law and her husband.
4:22 她又說：「榮耀離開以色列，因為 神的約櫃被擄去了。」
And she said, "The glory has departed from Israel, for the ark of God has been captured."
