經文: 民數記 22:18-19 巴蘭回答巴勒的臣僕說：巴勒就是將他滿屋的金銀給我，我行大事小事也不得越過耶和華我神的命。現在我請你們今夜在這裡住宿，等我得知耶和華還要對我說什麼。

默想: 巴蘭雖然不是以色列人，卻也是耶和華的先知。由此，我們知道耶和華會從不同種族與宗教中揀選他要使用的僕人。巴蘭對於耶和華的順服，是三心兩意的，是表面的。在巴蘭對巴勒臣僕的對話中，我們聽見的是巴蘭在別人面前所表現出來的公眾面 (public sphere)，在這裡巴蘭表現出對於耶和華的絕對順服。但是，當巴勒把報酬金額大幅提高之後，巴蘭卻在明知道耶和華不喜歡他前去咒詛以色列人的情況之下，三番兩次的向耶和華祈求。這種強求的態度導致耶和華的妥協與讓步。耶和華同意讓巴蘭前去，卻仍然禁止巴蘭開口咒詛以色列人。巴蘭在這種情況之下，竟然財迷心竅，聽不出耶和華同意他前去語調之不悅與無奈。雖然明明知道他就算去到道場，也無法咒詛以色列人，巴蘭還是一大早就興沖沖的騎著他的驢子前去了。由此，我們可以看到巴蘭內心的深處，不足為外人道也的隱私面 (private sphere)，是充滿貪婪的。親愛的主啊！求你幫助我，讓我不管在公眾面或是隱私面，都是裡外一致的專一順服侍奉耶和華。

22:1 以色列人起行，在摩押平原、約旦河東，對著耶利哥安營。
Then the people of Israel set out, and encamped in the plains of Moab beyond the Jordan at Jericho.
22:2 以色列人向亞摩利人所行的一切事，西撥的兒子巴勒都看見了。
And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
22:3 摩押人因以色列民甚多，就大大懼怕，心內憂急，
And Moab was in great dread of the people, because they were many; Moab was overcome with fear of the people of Israel.
22:4 對米甸的長老說：「現在這眾人要把我們四圍所有的一概餂盡，就如牛餂盡田間的草一般。」那時西撥的兒子巴勒作摩押王。
And Moab said to the elders of Mid'ian, "This horde will now lick up all that is round about us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field." So Balak the son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time,
22:5 他差遣使者往大河邊的毘奪去，到比珥的兒子巴蘭本鄉那裡，召巴蘭來，說：「有一宗民從埃及出來，遮滿地面，與我對居。
sent messengers to Balaam the son of Be'or at Pethor, which is near the River, in the land of Amaw to call him, saying, "Behold, a people has come out of Egypt; they cover the face of the earth, and they are dwelling opposite me.
22:6 這民比我強盛，現在求你來為我咒詛他們，或者我能得勝，攻打他們，趕出此地。因為我知道，你為誰祝福，誰就得福；你咒詛誰，誰就受咒詛。」
Come now, curse this people for me, since they are too mighty for me; perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them from the land; for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed."
22:7 摩押的長老和米甸的長老手裡拿著卦金，到了巴蘭那裡，將巴勒的話都告訴了他。
So the elders of Moab and the elders of Mid'ian departed with the fees for divination in their hand; and they came to Balaam, and gave him Balak's message.
22:8 巴蘭說：「你們今夜在這裡住宿，我必照耶和華所曉諭我的回報你們。」摩押的使臣就在巴蘭那裡住下了。
And he said to them, "Lodge here this night, and I will bring back word to you, as the LORD speaks to me"; so the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam.
22:9 　神臨到巴蘭那裡，說：「在你這裡的人都是誰？」
And God came to Balaam and said, "Who are these men with you?"
22:10 巴蘭回答說：「是摩押王西撥的兒子巴勒打發人到我這裡來，說：
And Balaam said to God, "Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, saying,
22:11 『從埃及出來的民遮滿地面，你來為我咒詛他們，或者我能與他們爭戰，把他們趕出去。』」
`Behold, a people has come out of Egypt, and it covers the face of the earth; now come, curse them for me; perhaps I shall be able to fight against them and drive them out.'"
22:12 　神對巴蘭說：「你不可同他們去，也不可咒詛那民，因為那民是蒙福的。」
God said to Balaam, "You shall not go with them; you shall not curse the people, for they are blessed."
22:13 巴蘭早晨起來，對巴勒的使臣說：「你們回本地去吧，因為耶和華不容我和你們同去。」
So Balaam rose in the morning, and said to the princes of Balak, "Go to your own land; for the LORD has refused to let me go with you."
22:14 摩押的使臣就起來，回巴勒那裡去，說：「巴蘭不肯和我們同來。」
So the princes of Moab rose and went to Balak, and said, "Balaam refuses to come with us."
22:15 巴勒又差遣使臣，比先前的又多又尊貴。
Once again Balak sent princes, more in number and more honorable than they.
22:16 他們到了巴蘭那裡，對他說：「西撥的兒子巴勒這樣說：『求你不容甚麼事攔阻你不到我這裡來，
And they came to Balaam and said to him, "Thus says Balak the son of Zippor: `Let nothing hinder you from coming to me;
22:17 因為我必使你得極大的尊榮。你向我要甚麼，我就給你甚麼；只求你來為我咒詛這民。』」
for I will surely do you great honor, and whatever you say to me I will do; come, curse this people for me.'"
22:18 巴蘭回答巴勒的臣僕說：「巴勒就是將他滿屋的金銀給我，我行大事小事也不得越過耶和華─我　神的命。
But Balaam answered and said to the servants of Balak, "Though Balak were to give me his house full of silver and gold, I could not go beyond the command of the LORD my God, to do less or more.
22:19 現在我請你們今夜在這裡住宿，等我得知耶和華還要對我說甚麼。」
Pray, now, tarry here this night also, that I may know what more the LORD will say to me."
22:20 當夜，　神臨到巴蘭那裡，說：「這些人若來召你，你就起來同他們去，你只要遵行我對你所說的話。」
And God came to Balaam at night and said to him, "If the men have come to call you, rise, go with them; but only what I bid you, that shall you do."
22:21 巴蘭早晨起來，備上驢，和摩押的使臣一同去了。
So Balaam rose in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab.
22:22 　神因他去就發了怒；耶和華的使者站在路上敵擋他。他騎著驢，有兩個僕人跟隨他。
But God's anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of the LORD took his stand in the way as his adversary. Now he was riding on the ass, and his two servants were with him.
22:23 驢看見耶和華的使者站在路上，手裡有拔出來的刀，就從路上跨進田間，巴蘭便打驢，要叫牠回轉上路。
And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road, with a drawn sword in his hand; and the ass turned aside out of the road, and went into the field; and Balaam struck the ass, to turn her into the road.
22:24 耶和華的使者就站在葡萄園的窄路上；這邊有牆，那邊也有牆。
Then the angel of the LORD stood in a narrow path between the vineyards, with a wall on either side.
22:25 驢看見耶和華的使者，就貼靠牆，將巴蘭的腳擠傷了；巴蘭又打驢。
And when the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she pushed against the wall, and pressed Balaam's foot against the wall; so he struck her again.
22:26 耶和華的使者又往前去，站在狹窄之處，左右都沒有轉折的地方。
Then the angel of the LORD went ahead, and stood in a narrow place, where there was no way to turn either to the right or to the left.
22:27 驢看見耶和華的使者，就臥在巴蘭底下，巴蘭發怒，用杖打驢。
When the ass saw the angel of the LORD, she lay down under Balaam; and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he struck the ass with his staff.
22:28 耶和華叫驢開口，對巴蘭說：「我向你行了甚麼，你竟打我這三次呢？」
Then the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said to Balaam, "What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?"
22:29 巴蘭對驢說：「因為你戲弄我，我恨不能手中有刀，把你殺了。」
And Balaam said to the ass, "Because you have made sport of me. I wish I had a sword in my hand, for then I would kill you."
22:30 驢對巴蘭說：「我不是你從小時直到今日所騎的驢嗎？我素常向你這樣行過嗎？」巴蘭說：「沒有。」
And the ass said to Balaam, "Am I not your ass, upon which you have ridden all your life long to this day? Was I ever accustomed to do so to you?" And he said, "No."
22:31 當時，耶和華使巴蘭的眼目明亮，他就看見耶和華的使者站在路上，手裡有拔出來的刀，巴蘭便低頭俯伏在地。
Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, with his drawn sword in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face.
22:32 耶和華的使者對他說：「你為何這三次打你的驢呢？我出來敵擋你，因你所行的，在我面前偏僻。
And the angel of the LORD said to him, "Why have you struck your ass these three times? Behold, I have come forth to withstand you, because your way is perverse before me;
22:33 驢看見我就三次從我面前偏過去；驢若沒有偏過去，我早把你殺了，留牠存活。」
and the ass saw me, and turned aside before me these three times. If she had not turned aside from me, surely just now I would have slain you and let her live."
22:34 巴蘭對耶和華的使者說：「我有罪了。我不知道你站在路上阻擋我；你若不喜歡我去，我就轉回。」
Then Balaam said to the angel of the LORD, "I have sinned, for I did not know that thou didst stand in the road against me. Now therefore, if it is evil in thy sight, I will go back again."
22:35 耶和華的使者對巴蘭說：「你同這些人去吧！你只要說我對你說的話。」於是巴蘭同著巴勒的使臣去了。
And the angel of the LORD said to Balaam, "Go with the men; but only the word which I bid you, that shall you speak." So Balaam went on with the princes of Balak.
22:36 巴勒聽見巴蘭來了，就往摩押京城去迎接他；這城是在邊界上，在亞嫩河旁。
When Balak heard that Balaam had come, he went out to meet him at the city of Moab, on the boundary formed by the Arnon, at the extremity of the boundary.
22:37 巴勒對巴蘭說：「我不是急急地打發人到你那裡去召你嗎？你為何不到我這裡來呢？我豈不能使你得尊榮嗎？」
And Balak said to Balaam, "Did I not send to you to call you? Why did you not come to me? Am I not able to honor you?"
22:38 巴蘭說：「我已經到你這裡來了！現在我豈能擅自說甚麼呢？　神將甚麼話傳給我，我就說甚麼。」
Balaam said to Balak, "Lo, I have come to you! Have I now any power at all to speak anything? The word that God puts in my mouth, that must I speak."
22:39 巴蘭和巴勒同行，來到基列•胡瑣。
Then Balaam went with Balak, and they came to Kir'iath-hu'zoth.
22:40 巴勒宰了（原文作獻）牛羊，送給巴蘭和陪伴的使臣。
And Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam and to the princes who were with him.
22:41 到了早晨，巴勒領巴蘭到巴力的高處；巴蘭從那裡觀看以色列營的邊界。
And on the morrow Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Bamoth-ba'al; and from there he saw the nearest of the people.
