And Jacob lifted up his eyes and looked, and behold, Esau was coming, and four hundred men with him. So he divided the children among Leah and Rachel and the two maids. And he put the maids with their children in front, then Leah with her children, and Rachel and Joseph last of all. He himself went on before them, bowing himself to the ground seven times, until he came near to his brother. But Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck and kissed him, and they wept. And when Esau raised his eyes and saw the women and children, he said, "Who are these with you?" Jacob said, "The children whom God has graciously given your servant." 33:6 於是兩個使女和她們的孩子前來下拜; Then the maids drew near, they and their children, and bowed down; 33:7 利亞和她的孩子也前來下拜;隨後約瑟和拉結也前來下拜。 Leah likewise and her children drew near and bowed down; and last Joseph and Rachel drew near, and they bowed down. Esau said, "What do you mean by all this company which I met?" Jacob answered, "To find favor in the sight of my lord." 33:9 以掃說:「兄弟啊,我的已經夠了,你的仍歸你吧!」 But Esau said, "I have enough, my brother; keep what you have for yourself." 33:10 雅各說:「不然,我若在你眼前蒙恩,就求你從我手裡收下這禮物;因為我見了你的面,如同見了 神的面,並且你容納了我。 Jacob said, "No, I pray you, if I have found favor in your sight, then accept my present from my hand; for truly to see your face is like seeing the face of God, with such favor have you received me. 33:11 求你收下我帶來給你的禮物;因為 神恩待我,使我充足。」 Accept, I pray you, my gift that is brought to you, because God has dealt graciously with me, and because I have enough." Thus he urged him, and he took it. 33:12 以掃說:「我們可以起身前往,我在你前頭走。」 Then Esau said, "Let us journey on our way, and I will go before you." 33:13 雅各對他說:「我主知道孩子們年幼嬌嫩,牛羊也正在乳養的時候,若是催趕一天,群畜都必死了。 But Jacob said to him, "My lord knows that the children are frail, and that the flocks and herds giving suck are a care to me; and if they are overdriven for one day, all the flocks will die. Let my lord pass on before his servant, and I will lead on slowly, according to the pace of the cattle which are before me and according to the pace of the children, until I come to my lord in Se'ir." 33:15 以掃說:「容我把跟隨我的人留幾個在你這裡。」 So Esau said, "Let me leave with you some of the men who are with me." But he said, "What need is there? Let me find favor in the sight of my lord." 33:16 於是,以掃當日起行,回往西珥去了。 So Esau returned that day on his way to Se'ir. 33:17 雅各就往疏割去,在那裡為自己蓋造房屋,又為牲畜搭棚;因此那地方名叫疏割【就是棚的意思】。 But Jacob journeyed to Succoth, and built himself a house, and made booths for his cattle; therefore the name of the place is called Succoth. And Jacob came safely to the city of Shechem, which is in the land of Canaan, on his way from Paddan-aram; and he camped before the city. And from the sons of Hamor, Shechem's father, he bought for a hundred pieces of money the piece of land on which he had pitched his tent. There he erected an altar and called it El-El'ohe-Israel.
(The Sovereignty of God over the world)
On that night the king could not sleep; and he gave orders to bring the book of memorable deeds, the chronicles, and they were read before the king. And it was found written how Mor'decai had told about Bigthana and Teresh, two of the king's eunuchs, who guarded the threshold, and who had sought to lay hands upon King Ahasu-e'rus. And the king said, "What honor or dignity has been bestowed on Mor'decai for this?" The king's servants who attended him said, "Nothing has been done for him." 6:4 王說:「誰在院子裡?」(那時哈曼正進王宮的外院,要求王將末底改掛在他所預備的木架上。) And the king said, "Who is in the court?" Now Haman had just entered the outer court of the king's palace to speak to the king about having Mor'decai hanged on the gallows that he had prepared for him. So the king's servants told him, "Haman is there, standing in the court." And the king said, "Let him come in." 6:6 哈曼就進去。 So Haman came in, and the king said to him, "What shall be done to the man whom the king delights to honor?" And Haman said to himself, "Whom would the king delight to honor more than me?" 6:7 哈曼就回答說:「王所喜悅尊榮的, and Haman said to the king, "For the man whom the king delights to honor, 6:8 當將王常穿的朝服和戴冠的御馬, let royal robes be brought, which the king has worn, and the horse which the king has ridden, and on whose head a royal crown is set; 6:9 都交給王極尊貴的一個大臣,命他將衣服給王所喜悅尊榮的人穿上,使他騎上馬,走遍城裡的街市,在他面前宣告說:王所喜悅尊榮的人,就如此待他。」 and let the robes and the horse be handed over to one of the king's most noble princes; let him array the man whom the king delights to honor, and let him conduct the man on horseback through the open square of the city, proclaiming before him: `Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor.'" 6:10 王對哈曼說:「你速速將這衣服和馬,照你所說的,向坐在朝門的猶大人末底改去行。 Then the king said to Haman, "Make haste, take the robes and the horse, as you have said, and do so to Mor'decai the Jew who sits at the king's gate. Leave out nothing that you have mentioned." 6:11 於是哈曼將朝服給末底改穿上,使他騎上馬,走遍城裡的街市,在他面前宣告說:「王所喜悅尊榮的人,就如此待他。」 So Haman took the robes and the horse, and he arrayed Mor'decai and made him ride through the open square of the city, proclaiming, "Thus shall it be done to the man whom the king delights to honor." 6:12 末底改仍回到朝門,哈曼卻憂憂悶悶地蒙著頭,急忙回家去了, Then Mor'decai returned to the king's gate. But Haman hurried to his house, mourning and with his head covered. And Haman told his wife Zeresh and all his friends everything that had befallen him. Then his wise men and his wife Zeresh said to him, "If Mor'decai, before whom you have begun to fall, is of the Jewish people, you will not prevail against him but will surely fall before him." 6:14 他們還與哈曼說話的時候,王的太監來催哈曼快去赴以斯帖所預備的筵席。 While they were yet talking with him, the king's eunuchs arrived and brought Haman in haste to the banquet that Esther had prepared.
So the king and Haman went in to feast with Queen Esther. And on the second day, as they were drinking wine, the king again said to Esther, "What is your petition, Queen Esther? It shall be granted you. And what is your request? Even to the half of my kingdom, it shall be fulfilled." 7:3 王后以斯帖回答說:「我若在王眼前蒙恩,王若以為美,我所願的,是願王將我的性命賜給我;我所求的,是求王將我的本族賜給我。 Then Queen Esther answered, "If I have found favor in your sight, O king, and if it please the king, let my life be given me at my petition, and my people at my request. For we are sold, I and my people, to be destroyed, to be slain, and to be annihilated. If we had been sold merely as slaves, men and women, I would have held my peace; for our affliction is not to be compared with the loss to the king." 7:5 亞哈隨魯王問王后以斯帖說:「擅敢起意如此行的是誰? Then King Ahasu-e'rus said to Queen Esther, "Who is he, and where is he, that would presume to do this?" 7:6 以斯帖說:「仇人敵人就是這惡人哈曼!」 And Esther said, "A foe and enemy! This wicked Haman!" Then Haman was in terror before the king and the queen. And the king rose from the feast in wrath and went into the palace garden; but Haman stayed to beg his life from Queen Esther, for he saw that evil was determined against him by the king. And the king returned from the palace garden to the place where they were drinking wine, as Haman was falling on the couch where Esther was; and the king said, "Will he even assault the queen in my presence, in my own house?" As the words left the mouth of the king, they covered Haman's face. Then said Harbo'na, one of the eunuchs in attendance on the king, "Moreover, the gallows which Haman has prepared for Mor'decai, whose word saved the king, is standing in Haman's house, fifty cubits high." 7:10 於是人將哈曼掛在他為末底改所預備的木架上。 And the king said, "Hang him on that." So they hanged Haman on the gallows which he had prepared for Mor'decai. Then the anger of the king abated.
On that day King Ahasu-e'rus gave to Queen Esther the house of Haman, the enemy of the Jews. And Mor'decai came before the king, for Esther had told what he was to her; 8:2 王摘下自己的戒指,就是從哈曼追回的,給了末底改。 and the king took off his signet ring, which he had taken from Haman, and gave it to Mor'decai. And Esther set Mor'decai over the house of Haman. Then Esther spoke again to the king; she fell at his feet and besought him with tears to avert the evil design of Haman the Ag'agite and the plot which he had devised against the Jews. And the king held out the golden scepter to Esther, 8:5 說:「亞甲族哈米大他的兒子哈曼設謀傳旨,要殺滅在王各省的猶大人。 and Esther rose and stood before the king. And she said, "If it please the king, and if I have found favor in his sight, and if the thing seem right before the king, and I be pleasing in his eyes, let an order be written to revoke the letters devised by Haman the Ag'agite, the son of Hammeda'tha, which he wrote to destroy the Jews who are in all the provinces of the king. For how can I endure to see the calamity that is coming to my people? Or how can I endure to see the destruction of my kindred?" 8:7 亞哈隨魯王對王后以斯帖和猶大人末底改說:「因哈曼要下手害猶大人,我已將他的家產賜給以斯帖,人也將哈曼掛在木架上。 Then King Ahasu-e'rus said to Queen Esther and to Mor'decai the Jew, "Behold, I have given Esther the house of Haman, and they have hanged him on the gallows, because he would lay hands on the Jews. And you may write as you please with regard to the Jews, in the name of the king, and seal it with the king's ring; for an edict written in the name of the king and sealed with the king's ring cannot be revoked." 8:9 三月,就是西彎月二十三日,將王的書記召來,按著末底改所吩咐的,用各省的文字、各族的方言,並猶大人的文字方言寫諭旨,傳給那從印度直到古實一百二十七省的猶大人和總督省長首領。 The king's secretaries were summoned at that time, in the third month, which is the month of Sivan, on the twenty-third day; and an edict was written according to all that Mor'decai commanded concerning the Jews to the satraps and the governors and the princes of the provinces from India to Ethiopia, a hundred and twenty-seven provinces, to every province in its own script and to every people in its own language, and also to the Jews in their script and their language. The writing was in the name of King Ahasu-e'rus and sealed with the king's ring, and letters were sent by mounted couriers riding on swift horses that were used in the king's service, bred from the royal stud. By these the king allowed the Jews who were in every city to gather and defend their lives, to destroy, to slay, and to annihilate any armed force of any people or province that might attack them, with their children and women, and to plunder their goods, 8:12 併入上一節 upon one day throughout all the provinces of King Ahasu-e'rus, on the thirteenth day of the twelfth month, which is the month of Adar. A copy of what was written was to be issued as a decree in every province, and by proclamation to all peoples, and the Jews were to be ready on that day to avenge themselves upon their enemies. So the couriers, mounted on their swift horses that were used in the king's service, rode out in haste, urged by the king's command; and the decree was issued in Susa the capital. Then Mor'decai went out from the presence of the king in royal robes of blue and white, with a great golden crown and a mantle of fine linen and purple, while the city of Susa shouted and rejoiced. The Jews had light and gladness and joy and honor. And in every province and in every city, wherever the king's command and his edict came, there was gladness and joy among the Jews, a feast and a holiday. And many from the peoples of the country declared themselves Jews, for the fear of the Jews had fallen upon them.
